The Maricopa Association of Combat Veterans is a non-profit organization created by retired Naval Corpsman and sitting Maricopa Community College Board of Supervisors Board Member, Jerry Walker, to help Valley veterans better their lives through education and skill training. The MACV Foundation is a group of military veterans and non-veterans, family members and community leaders – all working together to support reintegration and readjustment projects for returning veterans and their families.

"After wars' end, soldiers once again become civilians and return to their families to try to pick up where they left off. It is this process of readjustment that has more often than not been ignored by society."

John Gebhardt's wife, Mindy, said that this little girl's entire family was executed. The insurgents intended to execute her and shot her in the head, however she survived the brutal attack. The little girl was cared for at the hospital were John is stationed. While the little girl received the best care possible she continued to cry and moan which compromised the healing process. The nurses said John was the only one that could keep her comfortable and calm, so John spent several nights holding her while they both slept in that chair. The girl is recovering very well from her near fatal wound and in time will recover form the ordeal. John Gebhardt is an example of one of Americans Shinning Stars of War, and another of our heroes of peace.
